Chesapeake PERL is a biological manufacturer specializing in the production of high quality proteins that meet the exacting requirements of our partners and customers.  Depending on the specific need, we produce highly purified proteins, including multimeric forms and self-assembling macromolecular structures, partially purified material such as lipid-rich fractions, or bulk material.  Our proteins are functional, modified and processed to resemble native proteins, and produced flexibly and reliably at whatever scale is required. 

We specialize in long-term partnerships, working closely from the design and optimization of genes and expression vectors through the production and testing of the final product.  Together, we are developing a range of research reagents, animal and human diagnostic products and vaccine candidates. 

One partner distributes our Influenza virus reagents, and antibodies prepared from them, around the world as part of public health surveillance efforts [Influenza Program], while another is using our bioscavengers and esterases in research efforts towards defense medical countermeasures [Bioscavenger Program].

Our proprietary production platform is an in vivo implementation of the Baculovirus Expression Vector System, in which caterpillars serve as living bioreactors [LINK-TECHNOLOGY PAGE].  Their tissue heterogeneity leads to modification and processing more closely resembling native forms, as well as high levels of protein expression.  The highly automated system enables predictable production of insect larvae, and the recombinant proteins they contain, with unprecedented flexibility in production scale, and is supported by a rich array of molecular tools to enhance expression and solubility and broad expertise in protein purification and characterization.
